Animal hair bristles were replaced by synthetic fibers, usually nylon by DuPont in 1938. In 2003, the toothbrush was selected as the number one invention Americans could not live without.
The first electric toothbrush, the Broxdent, was introduced by Bristol-Myers Company at the centennial of American Dental Association in 1959. An electric toothbrush can clean your teeth more effectively than a manual toothbrush. An electric toothbrush can be an effective aid in fighting gum disease. Gingivitis is bacteria that lives between your teeth and gums. With the use of an electric toothbrush gingivitis can be eliminated. Even stains on your teeth can be greatly improved or removed with an electric toothbrush.
